Achieving better local searches with Google Places for Business

These days, if you’re not on the first couple of pages of Google your business is probably missing out on a lot of potential customers and new business.

If you’ve got great search engine optimisation you might be lucky enough to be on the first page of Google’s organic searches, otherwise you might be spending hundreds of dollars a week in pay-per-click to achieve good results.

But there is another option, which Google provide free of charge, called Google Places for Business.

Google Places is the search results you often see at the top of the listings next to the Google Map, which provides a basic overview of the business listing and often a star review of the business.

There are limited spots available for Google Places listings, but there are a few simple tricks to getting your business into these top spots and generating a huge amount of free traffic to your website.

google-places-sunshine-coast.jpg

Here are out tips for creating a great listing on Google Places for Business:

The easiest way to get started is to type in ‘Google Places’ into Google or follow the link to the Google Local Business Center – http://www.google.com/local/add

You may need to create a Google account if you haven’t already.

Now you need to create your Google Business profile. Creating this correctly is the key to your success on Google..
Make sure you include a physical postal address and a real phone number as Google will verify you are a real business by either calling you or posting you a code to enter into your account.

Make sure your description contains [a good amount of keywords that reflect your business and that you want to be found under. For instance if you have a car parts business your description should be something like: ‘Todd’s Used Car Parts Calgary stocks genuine vehicle parts for all european makes and model cars.’

the description now includes a good variety of specific keywords including the location to help Google recognise exactly what the business does.

Makes rue the categories you choose reflect the business and your description.

You can also add your trading hours, payment types etc. The more you add the more Google loves you.

Now, you can also include photos and a logo. Preparing these correctly can help your listing.
Name each image with relevance to your business, for example: rather than an image name like ‘img123.jpg’ name it ‘calgary_car_parts.jpg’

This also goes for your logo as well.

for the images, don’t make them too large or they will load slow. A good size is about 600 x 450 pixels at 72dpi.

Google Place Reviews for your Business

Often you will see reviews on the Google Places listings. These reviews can also help drive the listing to the top spots.
If you run your website or blog on WordPress you can also get reviews directly from your website listed on Google Places by simple adding a Google Reviews plugin into your website. The plugin is free, and it places a Review button on each page of your website allowing people to comment, which you verify before it goes live. These reviews then show up on Google Places.
This is particularly helpful if you have an online shopping cart, real estate site or a business directory.

Blogging: Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Many people are turning to creating blogs for their existing websites to increase traffic to their websites.

Major search engines such as Google, love blogs and rank them very highly for a number of reasons, but mainly because they are ‘keyword-rich’.

One of the ways to achieving a high placement on the search engines is through the use of the correct keywords in the right place on your websites. The search engines work very similar to a human in the fact that they usually read from the top left hand corner of the website, with the title description being one of the most important factors to achieving placement on the search engines for the correct search term you want to be found with.

So for instance, if your website focuses on holiday accommodation at the Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast (http://www.palazzogoldcoast.com), and you have a blog either hosted on the same site, or have an external blog through blogspot which you link directly to the website, your blog post title should reflect your subject, your location, and your hotel accommodation name. Possibly something like this….

‘Budget Accommodation Deals on the Gold Coast at Palazzo Versace’.

Now, if your website and blog is located on the Gold Coast and you want to be found when people search for Gold Coast accommodation make sure your blog ONLY reflects the Gold Coast.

I have seen a number of accommodation web site developers add blogs to their clients websites in the attempt to improve their search engine rankings, but they add other accommodation listings for other hotels as well. While this may detract from bookings on their clients hotel, it will still get good search results for Gold Coast accommodation.

Now, I have seen a number of accommodation website developers attempt this, but instead of adding just related categories, they add Categories to the blog for other locations, and then also include other hotels for other locations.

This is a HUGE MISTAKE!!

The header of the blog now appears something like this:

‘Hotel Name | Port Douglas Accommodation | Gold Coast Accommodation’

I think even if you are not a web developer you can see the obvious mistake… For starters, the search engines don’t know whether the accommodation is in Port Douglas or on the Gold Coast, so it usually drops it from the search engines as it considers it spam. Search engines are smart and realize when you are trying to trick them!

The other problem is you are trying to get the keyword density up for ‘Gold Coast Accommodation’ but then you start adding reference to Port Douglas, this dilutes the keyword density for Gold Coast Accommodation, so while your website statistics on paper might appear good, it is only because people are finding your post for the wrong reasons, while actually pushing your Gold Coast Accommodation listing down the ranks of the search engine.
Download a free copy of WebCEO and run a basic report on your website and you will soon see the reason people are actually finding you. You may be surprised at the results. General website statistics provided by your hosting company can be misleading when the full details aren’t provided.

Whether done on purpose by your web developer to try and get you more hits to your website, it is actually going to damage your ranking on the search engines. I have seen many websites drop from the search engines by this technique by web developers.

Want to know the real secret to achieving top search engine listing with your blog?
Stay tuned.

I will reveal this very simply step that anyone can do in my next blog post, Blogging: Achieving first page results on Google.

Achieving the Millionaires Lifestyle Online

Achieving the Millionaires Lifestyle Online

We have all encountered those days of waking up not wanting to go to work…The rush to get ready for work, then traffic chaos or trying to catch a train to get there, only to spend the day with a bunch of ‘team mates’ that you don’t really enjoy and a boss that stresses you out and doesn’t appreciate your hard work which is only really making him wealthy.

Then you go home, fighting the traffic chaos once again, have a few hours of personal time with your family, and then hit the pillow in preparation to do it all again.

I even know people that choose to live in a suburb they don’t really like just because they can be closer to their job. Isn’t that just totally nuts!!!??

Now, I don’t know about you, but to me this doesn’t sound like a ‘MIllionaires Lifestyle‘.

See, a Millionaires Lifestyle is not about BEING a millionaire, it’s about having the lifestyle…the freedom to do what you want, when you want, and still pay all your bills and have plenty of cash left over to enjoy life.

It’s very easily achievable, yet so many people choose the option I mentioned above instead.

After doing the daily 1.5 hour drive battling traffic to drive to the city every day, on top of working a 10 hour day for someone else, I decided to choose to have the what I consider the ‘millionaires lifestyle’.
I work from my home office in a nice residential island community, drive a nice european car, go for a swim in my pool during ‘work hours’, and go for a stroll along the waterfront or beach during the day. I can even wear boardshorts rather than a suit to work! But best of all, I am my own boss, I set my own financial income, and I love my ‘job’.

I don’t really call it a job, because it is more like a hobby I get rewarded financially to do.

After being on the ‘dark side’ in an office job for two long I decided it was time to choose the ‘Millionaires Lifestyle‘ option.

How is the Millionaires Lifestyle achievable?
We have all heard the stories that the internet can make some serious money, but yet many people don’t understand the internet’s full potential to harness the financial rewards. Online business can be extremely rewarding if done properly. You can achieve the Millionaires Lifestyle if you really want to, and by only spending a few hours or so each day. How does a 14 hour working week sound?!
This is achievable through online affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is the process of selling another persons products through your own webpage or blog and you make a commission on each sale. The commissions usually range from around 5% to a whopping 85% depending on what you are selling and the affiliate program you belong to. Setting up an affiliate plan actually costs nothing!
Your only real costs are your annual hosting and domain name, which is around $104 per year for both hosting and domain if you sign up with Webcrowd – www.Webcrowd.com.au.

Once you have your hosting you can either set up a webpage or a blog and with a little know-how on affiliate marketing you have created an online business. The beauty of an online business is your online ‘store’ is open 24 hours a day with worldwide exposure, which equals a lot of potential visitors, and more importantly , a lot of sales…most likely more than you could ever achieve in a normal business.

There are four basic rules to achieving the Millionaires Lifestyle:

1. You must have the right attitude
If you are planning on doing it just for the money, forget it! While the money is the target goal, internet marketing can be dull if you do not enjoy marketing, and unless your heart is in it you will tire quickly of it before it really blossoms for you.

2. Set an achievable goal, both financially and for the lifestyle you want.
Before starting your online venture jot down on a piece of paper why you are doing it, and the outcome you want from it.
The reasons to start it are easy..you may be sick of your job, want more income, want to work less, have more time with the kids, etc. But also plan the bigger picture…set the financial goal you want, and make it realistic. If you want to earn $100,000 a year than you need to make $277.72 per day, which is very achievable online. If you want to make 5 times that, it is also very achievable. Once you build the first system you simple duplicate it 5 times! Obviously more than a couple of hours a day is required though. You set a limit that suits your lifestyle plan.

3. You need to plan your marketing approach
Where most new online marketers go wrong is they have the ‘build it and they will come’ mentality. This is not the case.
If you really want to achieve success, like any online business, you need to market your business. Free online marketing tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogspot blogs, plus email marketing are a great way to attract new visitors and grow your database. Also it is recommended spending a little money on Google Adwords to get started. A $5 a day campaign is usually enough to generate a good response, and as your business grows spend a little more each day. The profits could surprise you!

4. You need to be patient and persistent!
Going back to Rule 1, you need to enjoy what you are doing as starting up can take a little while to really see initial results. Online Marketing is like fishing..you have to tempt them with the right bait and unless you keep throwing that line back out there and prepare to wait, you want get the fish. Patience brings home the big catch.

So if you are stuck in a job you don’t like, or would rather be by your swimming pool right now rather than stuck in the office ‘fish tank’, have a think about the ‘Millionaires Lifestyle’ you are missing out on.

The importance of Keyword Density on search engines

Monday, January 11th, 2010

When it comes to ensuring success on the search engines there are many important ingredients that need to go into the development of your website.

Most people are familiar with ensuring your website is well keyworded, but many do not realise the importance of ‘keyword density‘.

Adding too many keywords can see your website blacklisted for spamming, while not having enough specific keywords may not be strong enough to get you a mention at all.

Often you will notice that the highest ranking websites under most general search terms are the larger directory-based websites, while the smaller individual business websites are often following.

One of the main reasons larger websites outrank sites this way is due to the Keyword Density.

Keyword Density is quite simple to master when you know how it works…
Basically Keyword Density is the density of the priority keywords throughout the entire website. So for instance if you only have a three page website, then to get a high density you would need to use the main priority keywords that you would like to be found in the search engines very heavily throughout those three pages. The problem with this is that if you use the keyword too much you could be blacklisted!

But using the same keywords throughout a website with more pages provides a higher keyword density without overly using those keywords on each page, and the beauty of a larger website is that you can also use additional priority keywords throughout the website as well, so you have a multitude of popular search phrases throughout the website.

Where I live here on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, the main business trade is holiday accommodation. Being a very competitive market it is obviously important to ensure the accommodation websites that make it to the top have the best keyword density.

Having built a large number of Sunshine Coast accommodation websites over the past years, it was always a challenge to ensure they outrank their competitors, but with a good basic knowledge of how to correctly use keywords and keyword density it becomes quite easy once you know the correct technique.

However, there are many Sunshine Coast accommodation websites lately that are integrating the booking systems of other websites into their website’s navigation, which in theory makes it easier for them to accept bookings online. However the negative reaction by the search engines from this is that they are immediately diluting their keyword density of their own website and substituting it with the linked keywords that are found on the other website that is now integrated into their navigation. This means that if the linked website contains unrelated keywords, such as other accommodation locations (for instance, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney, etc) then their density for Sunshine Coast accommodation immediately drops greatly, sending them sliding backwards down the search engine rankings ladder. Even worse, if their are replacing their own navigation with links to pages from another website then the results can be catastrophic, as the most important content of most websites, from a search engine’s perspective, is found in the top area of your web pages.

To check your own keyword density of your website I recommend a software package called Web CEO. Web CEO software allows you to review your keyword density yourself (as well as your competitors!) and allows you to change your density live yourself very easily. It will also show you if any websites directly linked into your navigation are damaging your keyword density or search engine listings.
Check out the software online at http://www.webceo.com

Using some basic techniques and knowledge of Keyword Density can get your website to the top spots in the search engines!

Domain Names – The new real estate market

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Growing up we were always told to save and invest in real estate to secure our financial freedom.

Back 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago this was very sound advice.

However, with the real estate market becoming increasingly out of reach for many newcomers, and the share market a little uncertain, it is sometimes wise to look at other investment opportunities.

About 3 months before signs of the global financial crisis, I was talking with my financial advisor regarding the status of my investments, noticing that they were starting to slowly go backwards, and I asked him for his advice. He forewarned me that the market was about to take a big hit and I would be best to invest in other areas before I take a loss.

He made a few suggestions, but had no real solutions without me pouring lots of extra money into my investments, which would still be a huge risk.

I suggested that maybe I take my money and invest in the internet.
While this was a totally new concept to him and he could offer no advice in this area, I was quite confident and began putting some of my money into registering domain names.

Not just any domain names though, but good ‘top-level’ domain names.
Purchasing and managing a domain name yourself can cost as little as around $14 a year, and even doing nothing more than registering that domain name, I usually try and re-sell them for a minimum of $1500, which is a pretty good investment in my books, though it is not uncommon to make tens of thousands (or even more) for a single domain name.

Imagine if you could purchase a house, pay no rates, no maintenance and make a return 100 times what you paid for it after 12 months you’d be pretty happy!

You can even go a step further with that domain name and actually set it up as either a small commercial website, online store, or directory, so it is already ranking well on the search engines, plus making you some money, and you will usually find offers of thousands of dollars more for a profitable domain name are common.

There are plenty of very good domain name registrars where you can purchase great domain names at a very cheap rate, though before leaping in thinking that you will instantly make thousands of dollars with any domain name, make sure you do your research first;

1. Search for the most commonly searched keywords on the web and consider domain names that can be made from these keywords.

2. Check to see if these domain names are available.

3. Try and find top-level domains (eg, .com domains) rather than just local country domains as these rank much better.

4. Try and keep the domain names short and catchy. One or two word domain names usually get a better response.

5. Find out how you can make money from that domain name, such as linking up with Google Adsense, or building a small website to give the domain name more value, as well as covering all your costs associated with the purchase.

6. Find a good domain name reseller that can sell the domain for you. They usually charge a small fee for listing your domain on their website for sale, but using these services can often fetch you a lot more for your domain name.

For more information talk to Devision Design and we are happy to provide advice on choosing a good domain name, registering a domain name for you, and even how to set it up to profit from your domain name.

Registering a good domain name can be worth tens of thousands of dollars to you, and possibly a much better investment than your current share portfolio!

Professional Business Marketing on a Small Budget

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Starting up any new business can be tough at the best of times, and the current economic climate doesn’t make it any easier!

But don’t let all the doom and gloom you hear everyday stop you.

I would like to share some simple cost saving business marketing tips and services that our business, Devision, can provide that can have you looking as professional as the big guys, all for under $1000, including professional logo, business cards, letterheads and well ranking website!

Read on and I’ll tell you how!……

Branding & Logo Design – A few hundred dollars

We all know that one of the most important assets of any business is their brand and corporate identity. A professional eye catching and clever logo and brand is one of the key ingredients to any successful business, however a custom designed logo and corporate branding can usually cost big dollars.
But if you want a professional logo at a budget rate, many agencies such as Devision have a bank full of hundreds of unused logos created in the design process for other clients, which we offer at a discounted rate. Obviously it will not be a totally custom logo for your business, however many of the logos are generic enough that they can suit almost any type of business by simply changing a few colours, and you will save hundreds on the cost of your branding.

Business Card Printing – 1000 full colour for $50

Professional Business Cards are one of the next things on any new business list. They are the ‘first impression tool. for most businesses, so you don’t want some cheap laser-printed homemade business cards!
And with any new business you will want to hand out as many cards as possible to get your business name out there.
Devision offer 1000 full colour business cards for just $50!These are double sided (full colour front, greyscale/black reverse side) on a nice 300gsm artboard stock. There is a small charge if artwork or delivery is required, but you’ll agree it’s still very affordable!

Letterhead Printing – 500 full colour $170

Letterheads are the next thing you’ll be needing for your invoicing, promotional letters, etc. You can get started with 500 full colour professionally printed letterheads for as little as $170! And like most printing, the price per copy gets cheaper the more you have printed, saving you a packet!

Website – as little as a couple of hundred dollars

As I have mentioned in previous ramblings, your website is probably the single most important and most affordable marketing tool you can possibly have for your business. We receive around 85% of all new business directly through our website, and have clients all across the world that have found us online. The beauty of a website is you can start with a small website – a single page or a couple of pages for just a couple of hundred dollars, and in time build it up to suit your needs. With every website Devision design we professionally search engine optimise and submit it to the search engines using the latest techniques and SEO gear, so you’re not paying additional expenses later on to get on the search engines. In fact we are happy to coach you in SEO techniques so you can learn the secrets yourself and make sure you always stay ahead of your competitors!
Alternatively, for a few hundred dollars you can purchase a copy of Web CEO, the leading search engine optimisation software used by the professionals, and quickly learn to do it yourself.

Website Hosting - $7.95 a month

With your website you will also require a domain name and website hosting. Our partner company Webcrowd offer professional hosting plans for $7.95 a month, which are perfect for any small to medium professional business website, and you get the domain name of your choice (pending availability) for free!
The Webcrowd hosting includes unlimited email account, professional website statistics for your website, and you have full control via a Control Panel, allowing you to set up email accounts, add databases, etc as you need. And the best thing about Webcrowd is they are located in Australia so you get real local support!

So, add the services up that I have mentioned and you have no excuse not to get your business up and running in a few easy steps at a cost much cheaper than you probably thought. You have no excuses to get out there and beat the Economic Crisis Blues!
